a slave is not greater than his master --

If Jesus lived humbly, we are above doing the same. We are not greater than Him. Some people preach a prosperity doctrine that focuses on material things. This is not where your mind and efforts should be.

Romans 8:6-8

The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. 8 Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.

Those who seek wealth and power often have great excuses for wanting fancy automobiles and million-dollar homes. However, Jesus did not live in a mansion or wear expensive clothes. If He lived like that, why do we assume that we should?

Matthew 6:33

But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

There is nothing wrong with having things. The key is to not let things have you. Why are you pursuing wealth or status? Did God lead you there or are you seeking these things? Are you telling yourself how much you could do for God if you had wealth and power?

"The earth is the Lord's and everything in it." Everything we have belongs to God. We are only stewards. If we treat it as being ours and not as a trust, then we have stolen that which belongs to God.

1 Tim. 6:3-11

3 If anyone advocates a different doctrine and does not agree with sound words, those of our Lord Jesus Christ, and with the doctrine conforming to godliness, 4 he is conceited and understands nothing; but he has a morbid interest in controversial questions and disputes about words, out of which arise envy, strife, abusive language, evil suspicions, 5 and constant friction between men of depraved mind and deprived of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. 6 But godliness actually is a means of great gain when accompanied by contentment. 7 For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either. 8 If we have food and covering, with these we shall be content. 9 But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. 11 But flee from these things, you man of God, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness.
