Do you know what I have done to you? --

You have to know that none of them understood why He washed their feet. They were probably still in shock that He would do that.

This is an amazing revelation of the nature of God and His kingdom. In the Kingdom of God the greatest of them all, being God Himself, serves all, even the very least of them. This idea is the greatest, most important lesson that Jesus wanted to teach them before His death. He demonstrated it during His life, but now He was about to show them and the world what it means to follow Him. It means we are servants of all, even to the point of death.

By grace we have been saved. It is only by grace that we can follow Jesus in this:

John 15:12-13

"12 “This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends."
