laid aside His garments; and taking a towel, He girded Himself about --

Jesus took the job and appearance of a slave, whose job it was to serve those at the table. If anyone of that day would have entered the room as this was taking place, they would have assumed that Jesus was a slave.

The question is:

  1. Are we slaves? Do we serve, or do we want to be the master?
  2. Are we willing to be humbled to the extent that outsiders may think that we are servants?
  3. Are we willing to serve, not just in the better jobs, but also in the most meanial job?

I think that one of Judas' problems is that he wanted to rule. He wanted an elevated place in the kingdom of the Messiah. I don't think that he would have felt comfortable being a slave or being humbled. COULD THIS HAVE BEEN THE EVENT THAT PUSHED JUDAS OVER THE EDGE? Verse 2 says that the devil already put it into his heart to betray Jesus. Now, Jesus tells them that they need to serve one another and then Jesus tells the disciples that one of them will betray Him and points out Judas to John as the traitor.

John 13: 21-27

21 When Jesus had said this, He became troubled in spirit, and testified and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, that one of you will betray Me.” 22 The disciples began looking at one another, at a loss to know of which one He was speaking. 23 There was reclining on Jesus’ bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved. 24 So Simon Peter *gestured to him, and *said to him, “Tell us who it is of whom He is speaking.” 25 He, leaning back thus on Jesus’ bosom, *said to Him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus then *answered, “That is the one for whom I shall dip the morsel and give it to him.” So when He had dipped the morsel, He *took and *gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 After the morsel, Satan then entered into him. Therefore Jesus *said to him, “What you do, do quickly.”
