Jn. 8

Jn. 8:44

"You are of [your] father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own [nature]; for he is a liar, and the father of lies. [NASB]

He was a murderer from the beginning --

The devil appeared to Eve in the Garden of Eden and assured her that she would not die if she ate the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. He lied. He knew that God had said "for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die." But he told her "“You surely will not die!" And she believed him.

Then the devil enticed her. He told her that eating from the tree would make her wise, it would make her like God. He told her this in a way that slandered God's motives. The devil made it appear that God lied to Adam and Eve. He implied that God told them that they would die so that they would not be like Him: "For God knowsthat in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”"

The devil lied to her contradicting what God told them, and making it appear that God had lied to them for selfish and evil motives. He tempted them with visions of being like God. They believed the devil, they ate the fruit, and they died. They died spiritually that day because their sin separated them from God, and they also began to die physically.

The devil, from the beginning, was a liar and a murderer.

The devil is the father of lies --

To me, this is the danger. Those who lie are "channeling" the devil. He is the father of lies, implying that all lies ultimately originate from the devil. He is the source of all lies. In the same way that God is truth and does not lie, the devil is a liar and there is no truth in him. Everything he says is twisted and originates out of evil motives. When a person lies, they are aligning themselves with the devil and are speaking out of his spirit. This is a very evil and dangerous thing to do.

As a follower of Jesus, who is the truth, we need to hate lies. We need to understand the danger they pose to us and to others. Lies undermine our relationships with others and ultimately result in death and destruction. They are much more serious than we realize.

He was a murderer from the beginning --

The Serpent approached the woman, without authori[z]ation. This was not an angelic messenger sent from God. This was an unwarranted approach to someone not under his direct authority. God instructed the man regarding a warning of that which was inherent in creation (the matter of a certain kind of knowledge which existed but which was not the way that humanity was to live).

And God left the man to instruct the woman, for the man had precedence, being created first and woman being taken out of man.

The serpent confused the issue by obfuscation, asking a question about the trees of the garden and mixing that with the issue of the tree of knowledge of good and evil (which is not stated to be part of the providential provision of God towards humanity, as it is not stated - as are the other trees - to be 'in the garden').

He further lied about the consequences, outrageously contradicting God almighty, the Creator, who had faithfully warned humanity of the fatal consequences of partaking of that type of knowledge as a means of life. Thus also distracting and detracting from the true way of life for mankind : the Tree of Life in the midst of the garden.

The result was the death of the man and the woman.

Without the interference of the Serpent, those deaths would not have occurred.

This is the crime of homicide.

He was a liar and a murderer from the very beginning.
