He who is without sin --

Although we don't know what Jesus was writing in the dirt, but whatever it was, it is clear that none of them wanted to follow through with the plot. The key appears to be in what Jesus wrote in the dirt:

  • Jesus may have revealed certain details about the plot that they thought were secret. People who plot in secret often lose their resolve when they discover that the plot has been exposed.
  • Jesus may have revealed their secret sins. Maybe He wrote down the names of women they had been with. Maybe they were guilty of adultery too.
  • Jesus may have pointed out problems with their case. To me it seems to be a problem that the man was not present. Or maybe there were other issues.
