Unless the Lord of hosts Had left us a few survivors --

THIS IS THE CONDITION OF THE LAND AND THE PEOPLE

  • And still they refuse to repent
  • And still they seek after false gods
  • And still they continue to rebel against God

Yet the Lord left them a remnant. He did not allow Israel to be extinguished. The survival of a remnant is a key idea in the book of Isaiah and all the prophets. In a sense, this idea is echoed by Jesus: "Many are called but few are chosen.":

Isaiah 10:22

For though your people, O Israel, may be like the sand of the sea, [Only] a remnant within them will return; A destruction is determined, overflowing with righteousness.

Isaiah 11:16

And there will be a highway from Assyria For the remnant of His people who will be left, Just as there was for Israel In the day that they came up out of the land of Egypt.

Isaiah 28:5

In that day the LORD of hosts will become a beautiful crown And a glorious diadem to the remnant of His people;

Jeremiah 23:3

"Then I Myself will gather the remnant of My flock out of all the countries where I have driven them and bring them back to their pasture, and they will be fruitful and multiply.

Jeremiah 50:20

'In those days and at that time,' declares the LORD, 'search will be made for the iniquity of Israel, but there will be none; and for the sins of Judah, but they will not be found; for I will pardon those whom I leave as a remnant.'

Amos 5:15

Hate evil, love good, And establish justice in the gate! Perhaps the LORD God of hosts May be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.

Micah 2:12

"I will surely assemble all of you, Jacob, I will surely gather the remnant of Israel. I will put them together like sheep in the fold; Like a flock in the midst of its pasture They will be noisy with men.

Micah 7:18

Who is a God like You, who pardons iniquity And passes over the rebellious act of the remnant of His possession? He does not retain His anger forever, Because He delights in unchanging love.

Zephaniah 3:13

"The remnant of Israel will do no wrong And tell no lies, Nor will a deceitful tongue Be found in their mouths; For they will feed and lie down With no one to make them tremble."

We would be like Sodom and Gomorrah --

There were no survivors from Sodom and Gomorrah. But still, the comparison is extreme. The number of survivors will be few:

Isaiah 17: 4-7

4 Now in that day the glory of Jacob will fade,
And the fatness of his flesh will become lean.
5 It will be even like the reaper gathering the standing grain,
As his arm harvests the ears,
Or it will be like one gleaning ears of grain
In the valley of Rephaim.
6 Yet gleanings will be left in it like the shaking of an olive tree,
Two or three olives on the topmost bough,
Four or five on the branches of a fruitful tree,
Declares the Lord, the God of Israel.
7 In that day man will have regard for his Maker
And his eyes will look to the Holy One of Israel.
